You are required to take both exams, which will consist of a combination of a) multiple choice questions, b) short answers or fill-ins, and c) essays. The midterm exam covers all material that has been presented prior to that exam. The final exam covers all material presented during the semester, but with a greater emphasis on that which was presented after the midterm exam.
