Programs

Since 1995, the Women in Science and Engineering (Project WISE) program has collaborated with the Earth Science Educational Resource Center (ESERC) to enable young women to participate in ESERC's Let's Make Diamonds! educational program. Both high school students and undergraduates have been involved in the program.

The students perform an experiment designed to convert ordinary graphite into diamond under pressure and temperature conditions that prevail in the Earth's mantle. This part of the Earth is where diamonds form, however under natural conditions the process takes a very long time. Therefore, in the Let's Make Diamonds! program, we use a nickel-manganese catalyst to hasten the speed of the transformation. ESERC's educational programs and Project WISE are funded, in part, by the National Science Foundation.
